Build a family movie library for the price of one coffee a month

One rented box, one free app, and the films you own stop disappearing from a catalogue. Here is the real bill — not the one in the headline.

Every household with a streaming subscription has had the same evening: you sit down for a film you watched two years ago, and it is gone. Moved to another service, pulled from the region, or replaced by a remake. You never owned it — you rented access to a catalogue that changes without telling you.

The alternative is not exotic. It is a media server: one machine that holds your films and series, and an app on every TV and phone that plays them. Netflix without the catalogue changing under you, for the family, out of one library you control.

This guide gives the honest number. Not "build your own Netflix for free" — the real monthly bill, and what each euro buys.

The three parts, and only three

People imagine a wall of blinking hardware. There are exactly three pieces, and two of them are free.

    Somewhere to keep the files — the only part that costs money

    Your library has to live on a machine that is awake when someone presses play. That can be a computer at home, a NAS, or a rented box in a datacentre. This is the one line on the bill.

    The server app — free

    Plex or Jellyfin reads a folder of films, recognises them, downloads the posters and synopses, and serves them like a streaming service. Both are free. Jellyfin has no paid tier at all.

    On the TV, the phone, the tablet, the browser. Apple TV, Fire Stick, Android TV, Samsung, LG, iOS, Android: they all have a Plex and a Jellyfin app. Nothing to buy.

The laptop looks cheapest and is, for one person, at home. It falls apart the moment someone wants to watch from outside the house — because of a detail nobody mentions when they tell you to just use an old PC.

The detail that decides everything: upload, not download

Your internet connection is asymmetric. A typical French fibre line gives you something like 1000 Mb/s down and 300 Mb/s up — and on cable or DSL, upload can be 20 or even 5 Mb/s. Download is what you use to browse. Upload is what your home server uses to send a film to your sister.

A 1080p film needs roughly 8–12 Mb/s of upload to play without stalling. In 4K, 25–50 Mb/s. Two people watching at once doubles it. On a 20 Mb/s upload line, the second viewer breaks the first one.

What $10 a month actually gets you

A seedbox is a rented Linux machine with a lot of disk and a very fast connection, sold with the apps pre-installed. You get a web panel, you click Plex or Jellyfin, and it runs — no terminal, no Docker, no port forwarding on your router.

Three quarters of a terabyte sounds small next to a 4 TB disk. In practice a 1080p film is 4–8 GB, so 750 GB is 100 to 180 films — more than most households watch in two years. 4K is a different story: 25–40 GB each, so the same space holds twenty films.

Where the films come from — the part people skip

A server is empty until you fill it, and this is where the honest answer matters. Four sources, all of them yours to use:

  • The discs you already own. A shelf of DVDs and Blu-rays is a library that never expires. Ripping your own discs for your own use sits in different legal territory depending on the country — in France, circumventing a disc's copy protection is prohibited even for a personal copy. Worth knowing before you start.
  • Films you bought digitally. Some stores sell DRM-free downloads; those drop straight into the folder.
  • Public domain and freely licensed cinema. Larger than people expect: the Internet Archive alone holds thousands of films whose copyright has lapsed, plus concerts and documentaries released for free.
  • Your own footage. Holidays, a wedding, twenty years of camcorder tapes. A media server is the only tool that makes those watchable on the living-room TV without hunting for a cable.

The mistakes that double the bill

  1. 1Buying a NAS first. €550 before knowing whether the household will use it. Rent for three months, then buy if it stuck.
  2. 2Storing everything in 4K. Six times the space for a difference most people cannot see on a 43-inch screen at three metres. Keep 4K for the ten films that deserve it.
  3. 3Ignoring upload speed. Covered above, and it is the one that makes people give up.
  4. 4Paying for a plan with no Plex support. The cheapest seedbox tiers are torrent-only: no media server, so no streaming. Check that the plan lists Plex or Jellyfin.
  5. 5Buying storage for a library you have not built. Start at 750 GB. Moving up a tier takes a support ticket; moving down after a year of paying too much gets you nothing back.

The 20-minute version

The server, the software and the box are entirely legal — this is standard hosting, used by companies for backups and file transfer. What you put on it is your responsibility, exactly like a hard drive. Streaming your own ripped discs, your own footage or public-domain films breaks nothing.

+Do I need to know Linux?

No. Managed seedboxes install apps from a web panel in one click. You will not open a terminal unless you want to.
